Reiki FAQS

What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese holistic, energy-based relaxation and healing technique. The word derives from Rei (Universal) and Ki (life energy). It is the vital energy which naturally flows through and nurtures all living things, also known in different traditions as Chi (Chinese), Prana (Indian) and Mana (Hawaian). Reiki healing is a natural healing system believed to have originated in ancient Tibet and India.  It was rediscovered and developed in the 19th century by Dr Mikao Usui, a Japanese monk.

Reiki practitioners channel healing energy direct from the Source to other people. Receiving Reiki is known to have a soothing, refreshing and balancing effect on the whole being.  It can work with the causes of any illness or imbalance, as well as the symptoms. In a state of complete relaxation, Reiki can work its healing on deeper levels as it does not require conscious effort to heal. The more relaxed the client and practitioner, the greater the benefits. Clients often feel warmth or a pleasant tingling, although each client’s experience will be unique.

Many of my clients tell me they receive useful insights during healing sessions which raise their awareness of the current blessings and challenges in their life path.  Some find it helps in releasing blocked emotions.  Others may simply find it physically relaxing and a rare chance to unwind fully, away from everyday pressures.

Reiki is not allied to any particular religion or belief system.  It is open to all and will work whatever your beliefs.

How does Reiki work?

We are alive because life force is flowing through us.
Life force flows within the physical body though pathways called chakras, meridians.
It also flows around us in a field of energy called the aura.
Life force nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions.
When this flow disrupted, it causes diminished function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body.

The life force is responsive to thoughts and feelings.
It becomes disrupted when we accept, either consciously or unconsciously, negative thoughts or feelings about ourselves. These negative thoughts and feelings attach themselves to the energy field and cause a disruption in the flow of life force.
This diminishes the vital function of the organs and cells of the physical body.

Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached.
This causes the negative energy to break apart and fall away.
In so doing, Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, thus allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way.

How much does a treatment cost?

1 hour Reiki session costs £30.
Half hour sessions are £18
1 hour Reflexology plus half an hour Reiki is £45

What happens during a session?

A short case history is usually taken prior to discussing treatment options. If required, a treatment plan will be arranged and reviewed as necessary. This will always be subject to your own preferences, and can be changed at any time in line with progress.

During a treatment you will remain completely clothed (reiki energy passes easily through all materials, including plaster casts), while comfortably lying on a couch or sitting in a chair. The session often starts with clearing the aura of negative energies using my hands to gather up 'heavy' energy and literally 'throw' it out of the window, at the same time visualising it transforming to positive energy. Some clients can strongly feel the movement of energy round their body during this process.

This is followed by a 'scan' of the whole body where I am 'feeling' out areas of imbalance. I can often feel energy as a tingling in my hands and body, or a sensation of heat or cold. My hands will often be drawn or repelled from a particular area, which tells me whether I need to calm or stimulate a particular point. Sometimes, more energy is needed and sometimes there is an excess which needs to be drawn off.

I will place my hands unobtrusively on key points near or on the body. There is no massage or manipulation of any kind. The flow of universal energy is channelled by the therapist, to merge with the receivers energy, nourishing and revitalising both giver and receiver.

The hands are usually kept still for 3 to 5 minutes before moving to the next position. Overall the hand positions usually give a general coverage of the head, the front of the torso, the knees and feet. Some areas may need more attention than others, with the whole session lasting around 60 minutes. (Times will vary depending upon treatment combination)  The therapist will also use their intuition and allow themselves to be guided where to work. This is not critical however, as reiki energy naturally flows where it is most needed.

Reiki may be experienced as a flow of energy, mild tingling, warmth, coolness, other sensations, or nothing at all, it can also be given over a distance.
Treatment is enhanced if one can rest for a while afterwards and drink plenty of water to help the body detox. Be responsive to the needs of your body, e.g. resting if tired, and allow the energy to continue its work after the session ends. The beneficial effects may be felt for several days.

What does a Reiki treatment feel like?

What one experiences during a Reiki treatment varies somewhat from person to person. However, feelings of deep relaxation are usually felt by all and you may experience a "floating" feeling.
The energy flows where ever it is required and can be felt as heat, a tingling or cold under the practitioners hands. These and other feelings come from what the Reiki energy is actually doing in and around your body i.e. adding energy, removing excess energy, balancing, removing blockages etc.

As the Reiki energy encourages one to let go of all tension, anxiety, fear or other negative feelings a state of peace and well-being is experienced. Some drift off to sleep or report floating outside their bodies or see visions and/or colours. Others feel nothing at all, but this does not necessarily mean it is not having an effect on you.

Emotional Release

It is also possible that you experience different emotions or thoughts you had forgotten might pop up. If they do you are probably supposed to learn something and release them. Some people receive insights on how to solve problems. All healing starts a process of release, this could be emotions or even toxins in your body that you need to get rid of. You might initially even feel worse than before but this is soon passing. You can help your body by drinking lots of water. At the end of the treatment, one feels refreshed with a more positive, balanced outlook

Reiki is suitable whatever faith or beliefs you have.

The only thing you need to have is a sincere wish to help yourself (or others).
Most healing systems are based on intent and so is Reiki.

Can children receive Reiki?

Yes, anyone can receive Reiki.

A session for a child will normally be shorter than for an adult.

Can Reiki be used on animals?

Reiki works just as well with animals.

Horses, cats, dogs, birds and other animals have been given Reiki with good results.

Many pets want to be in the same room if you are giving or receiving Reiki.

Reiki energies can be sent to animals or one can actually put the hands on the body of the animal.

You can even use Reiki on flowers, seeds, trees etc. (If one holds seeds in one hand and gives Reiki to the seeds they will grow better when planted.)
